We are so grateful to KTVI for the chance to highlight the particular danger of drowning for kids diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. They are 160 times more likely to drown than their neurotypical peers. 160 TIMES!!
90% of the deaths of children under 14 diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder are from drowning.
Kids diagnosed with ASD are prone to wandering and are attracted to water. Supervision is critical. As is proper fencing. But another factor is lack of swim skills.
Swim lessons for kids can reduce drowning by 88%
Too many parents of kids with ASD don’t know that their kids can learn to swim. Traditionally has been underserved population
But interest in adaptive aquatics is increasing and, in particular, teaching kids with ASD. At the water safety conferences there is more and more focus. Swim Angelfish is a lesson provider focused solely on adaptive aquatics.
There may be other programs in St. Louis but we are most familiar with British Swim School.
In addition to swim lessons for neurotypical kids (and adults) British Swim School has two approaches to teaching kids with an ASD diagnosis.
All the instructors are trained in a program that includes careful adaptation to the needs of kids with ASD and uses methods created for teaching kids with autism how to swim.
For kids needing more accommodation, British Swim School has two instructors who have been certified by Swim Angelfish, the leading methodology for teaching kids with special needs. Lessons are taught one on one and British Swim School is planning a program of separate lessons in a dedicated location and at a dedicated time.
